Haymarket's 2023 Sustainability Statement

Updated: Sep 7

Haymarket People’s Fund released its 2023 Sustainability Statement to reflect on its financial history and share its vision for long-term stability in supporting grassroots anti-racist organizing across New England. The report highlights the organization’s journey from financial hardship in the early 2000s—marked by deficits, leadership transitions, and donor loss—toward resilience and renewed strength. With the support of donors, community members, and volunteers, Haymarket weathered the 2008 financial crisis, shifting political landscapes, and the COVID-19 pandemic. This perseverance allowed the organization to stabilize operations, expand grantmaking, and strengthen its participatory approach to philanthropy, ensuring that decision-making power rests with those most impacted by systemic racism.

Today, Haymarket has achieved a balanced budget, increased its endowment, and grown its grantmaking capacity—disbursing nearly $1 million to 69 groups in 2022. The organization is now able to provide multi-year sustaining grants, urgent response funds, and expanded support for grassroots movements while maintaining reserves and investing in staff and infrastructure. Looking ahead, Haymarket’s sustainability plan focuses on expanding the grants program, diversifying income sources, and building long-term financial health through endowment growth and fee-for-service training. While progress has been made, the report underscores that sustaining this work requires ongoing donor support to ensure that movements for racial and social justice can thrive for generations to come.
